Alcohol consumption leads to the formation of a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, which damages DNA. A research team from IOCB Prague has now described in detail how cells repair this damaged genetic information. Their study provides new insight into the link between alcohol consumption and the development of cancer.

“New research from FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine shows that even moderate drinking raises the risk of several cancers. Analyzing 62 studies, researchers found that both the frequency and amount of alcohol significantly influence cancer risk, with certain groups facing heightened vulnerability.

The European Health Alliance on Alcohol (EHAA) welcomes the European Parliament's AGRI Committee vote on the Wine Package. MEPs reaffirmed support for the scientifically accurate term "reduced-alcohol," rejecting misleading descriptors like "low" or "light" for wines up to 6% ABV. This decision prioritizes public health and consumer protection, aligning with Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. EHAA calls on the Parliament to uphold this position.
