23.06.2025 - Cancer Prevention Action Week 2025 runs from 23 to 29 June, and this year the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) is putting the spotlight on the link between alcohol and cancer. More than twenty organisations are already backing the campaign, which aims to build public and political awareness that alcohol contributes to at least seven different cancers, including breast and bowel.
WCRF points to sobering numbers: about 17 000 cancer cases a year in the UK – roughly 46 diagnoses every day – are attributable to alcohol. Surveys repeatedly show that most people are unaware that any amount of drinking raises cancer risk. By encouraging open conversations in homes, clinics and Parliament, the charity hopes to close that knowledge gap and help people make better informed choices.
To drive policy change, WCRF is collecting signatures for a petition calling on the UK Government to publish a new National Alcohol Strategy for England. The measures it wants – mandatory cancer warnings on labels, minimum unit pricing indexed to inflation and tighter marketing restrictions – are designed to reduce consumption, relieve pressure on the NHS and, ultimately, save lives. The petition is due to be delivered to Number 10 on Wednesday 25 June.
Anyone wishing to support the campaign can sign the petition online, confirm their email so the signature counts and share the link with friends and colleagues. A free toolkit, webinars for health professionals and daily blog posts offer easy ways to join the conversation throughout the week. Even swapping one drink for a donation to WCRF can serve as a reminder of why the message matters.
